The $301.5 Powerball winner is, Julie Leach. Ms. Leach took the lump sum amount of a whopping $197.4 million and was awarded her ceremonial cheque on Tuesday.
Ms. Leach said she was working the night shift and nipped out to get coffee and buy $20 worth of Powerball tickets for the big draw. During her lunch break at McDonald’s she checked her tickets to see if she had matched any of the winning numbers drawn. Even though it was just six little numbers to double check, she still had a hard time believing that all six numbers were on one ticket and that the winning ticket was in her hand. She went back to work at the Aquatic Bathware plant to ask her co-workers to verify the numbers.
“I kept trying to focus my eyes on the numbers and the dates” on the ticket. I was just shaking and in disbelief.”
Once they had confirmed that she had in fact got all the right numbers, Julie checked out of her shift immediately, saying she would not be back.
"I quit automatically. I was done," she said, laughing, at a news conference Tuesday.
She went home, woke her high school sweetheart partner of 36 years, Vaughn Avery and told him they were millionaires. He apparently still wanted to work. Julie told him, ‘Are you crazy? We don’t have to work anymore.’
It’s not just Julie and Vaughn that are quitting their jobs, the kids are too! Aaah the life of a lottery winner…
Julie said that the fiberglass factory where she worked was “one of the dirtiest, nastiest job.” The long hours didn’t look good either.
Looking at her Facebook page, Julie looks like a wonderful mom, proud of her children and grandchildren, with only the best wishes for their future.
Ms. Leach said that she plans to first and foremost look after her family and children. “I’m going to take care of my kids. I don’t want them to have to work like I had to work and deal with the kinds of things I had to deal with over life. I just want to make it a good life for them, take care of them.”
“We used to say if we ever won the lottery, we wanted to buy a whole bunch of land and build all of our kids a home and basically have our own little community,” she said.
For now, she would like to take her family on holiday to Hawaii and Alaska.
“It’s crazy, just unreal. Never thought it would happen. I’m still just in disbelief. I just don’t know what to say.” She added “My main focus was getting somebody to help me so I can make the right decisions and the right choices.”
“You just don’t ever think it’s going to happen… I keep going to sleep and waking up with the same beautiful dream. I’m starting to realize this is real.”
There’s nothing better, than to see someone as nice as Julie win a jackpot. After years of working under terrible conditions, Julie Leach can now finally enjoy everything that this wonderful world has to offer.
