The fourth of May has been recognised as International Star Wars Day (or May the 4th as our American cousins refer to it) for a few years now and with each year that passes, the more popular the day becomes. This year’s no exception, in fact, with the incoming saga, The Force Awakens this year’s Star Wars Day has been getting even more attention.
2015 Star Wars Day
Thanks to George Lucas, Star Wars Day celebrates on the biggest pop culture phenomenon ever, Star Wars and what better day to do so than the fourth of May, as it sounds so similar to the popular quote from the series, "May the fourth be with you."
This particular phrase, "May the Force be with you", is said on numerous occasions in the various films, by the good guys before they embark on a mission against the evil Empire.
On the 4th of May, 1979, Margaret Thatcher’s political party used the popular saying in an advertisement in The London Evening News after she took office as Prime Minister. It read, "May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie. Congratulations.”
The first organised Star Wars Day took place in Toronto, Canada in 2011 with an original Trilogy Trivia Game Show; which was a costume contest with celebrity judges; and the web's best tribute films, mash-ups, parodies, and remixes on the big screen.
The Force Awakes
The next Star Wars film, The Force Awakes, will be released on the 18th December 2015 to the absolute delight to Star Wars fans. The Star Wars franchise total revenue is believed to be around $27 billion, taking in box office sales, DVDs, video games and toy sales.
It has since grown into a grassroots tradition that allows people to reconnect with a film franchise that has touched generations of fans.
Let’s take a look at some of the top quotes from Star Wars:
"Do or do not… there is no try." – Yoda
Yoda is one of the biggest icons of Star Wars since his introduction in The Empire Strikes Back and although he can be rather strict, he can also be very playful. Yoda told Luke, "Do or do not… there is no try" in the film, The Empire Strikes Back, teaching Luke that he needs to focus on the present and grow up. The line has become a modern slogan and a reminder to commit oneself to something completely, win or lose.
