While we at PlayHugeLottos.com don’t advocate crime at all, something has to be said about how lucrative being a gangster has been for some people over the years. If you missed Part.1 of our list of The Most Successful Gangsters of ALL Time, you can find it here. Let’s continue now with Part.2 which is a collection of the most (financially) successful criminals of all time:
Griselda Blanco: $2billion
Next on our list, we have the infamous “Godmother” or “Black Widow” as she was called. Born in Colombia on February 15th, 1943, Blanco is suspected of committing over 200 murders while transporting cocaine from Colombia to the U.S. Raised by an abusive mother, she got exposed to prostitution from a young age and was involved with the Medellin Cartel whom she helped smuggle Colombian cocaine throughout the U.S. She initially arrived in New York in the mid 1970’s, already a successful smuggler, but was soon caught by U.S. law enforcement who intercepted one of her shipments. She fled back to Colombia after being indicted but returned and settled in Miami. There she continued working for the Medellin Cartel and got a reputation as a vicious murderer. Blanco was eventually caught and jailed for drug conspiracy. When she returned to Colombia at the age of 69 she was gunned down by two men on motorcycles. In her crime prime Blanco was making approximately $80million a month and in her peak she was worth $2billion.
Carlos Lehder: $2.7billion
Armenian Lehder was born in Colombia on September 7th, 1949. He was the founding member of the Medellin Cartel and took control of an island in the Bahamas which he used to transport cocaine between Colombia and the U.S. He used prison connections to help import the cocaine which he distributed across the U.S. Lehder was eventually run off the island by Professor Richard Novak, who was a diving enthusiast and was committed to keeping his perfect oasis clean. Lehder was eventually arrested and extradited to the United States where he was sentenced to 135 years in prison. This sentenced was supposedly reduced after he agreed to testify against the Panamanian dictator, Manuel Noriega. Lehder then disappeared into the witness protection program and all his possession and bank accounts were seized by government officials rendering him bankrupt. In his prime Lehder had built up an empire and amassed a sizable fortune of over $2.7billion.
Joaquin Guzman Loera: $5billion !
“El Chapo” came from a very poor background, with his dad working as a cattle rancher and him helping to sell fruit. Loera then learnt to grow poppies for opium and marijuana to help increase the family income. The short in stature Loera was then kicked out of his home when his father discovered his activities. He then went to live with his grandparents and got involved with the Sinaloa Drug Cartel, overseeing the drug trafficking between Mexico and the U.S. The drugs were obtained from Colombia and delivered into Mexico where Loera, as the middle man, ensured delivery into the U.S. and Europe. After the heads of the cartel was arrested, Loera took over and started manufacturing meth within Mexico. Forbes estimated Loera’s net worth to be around $5billion and even with a $5million bounty on his head as reward for capture, he still managed to evade the FBI and being on there most wanted list for more than 10 years. HE was eventually captured this year (2014) on the 22nd February at a Mexican resort.
Amado Carrillo Fuentes: $25billion !!
Another Mexican, Fuentes was born in Navolato Sinaloa in 1956 and was nicknamed “Lord of the Skies” as his preferred method of transporting cocaine was by utilizing private planes. Fuentes owned a fleet of 27 private jets; mostly Boeing 727’s and used them to carry his cocaine around the world. He became the leader of the Juarez Drug Cartel after murdering his former boss Rafael Aguilar Guajardo. As the new leader the cartel flourished under Fuentes and he gained success as one of the most powerful drug traffickers in the world. In 1997 it seemed that the authorities would finally catch up to the very elusive gangster so, as a last resort, he used his vast fortune to try to change his appearance by undergoing plastic surgery. The surgery was unsuccessful as Fuentes died on the operating table; whether it was due to a reaction to the medication or a respirator failure remains unclear. The gangster’s funeral was one of the most expensive in Mexican history with thousands in attendance. “The Lord of the Skies” was reported to have a net worth of over $25billion.
Pablo Escobar: $30billion !!!
Colombian drug lord, Pablo Escobar, tops our list as the number one most successful gangster of all time. He came from a poor family in Antioquia, Colombia and had always been living a life of crime, even as a youth, when young Pablo would steal and sell tombstones. He was a founding member of the Medellin Cartel and one of the most powerful cartels to work within the U.S. and at his height was reported to control over 80% of all cocaine being smuggled into America. Escobar was even featured in Forbes and Fortune magazines and was number seven on their list of the ten richest people on earth. His position was carefully crafted, and he played a key role as a giving member of society, making sure to sponsor charities, soccer clubs and investing in friends and contacts. Escobar’s fortune was estimated to be over $30billion so he could afford to even offer to pay off Colombia’s $10billion national debt. Toward the end of his life he was constantly on the run, and even hid in prison, but he was eventually found and gunned down by Colombian police in 1993 while trying to evade capture.
It would seem that the old adage ‘Crime doesn’t pay’ needs to be reviewed and revised when considering these fortunes.
