Nothing beats that feeling of winning the lottery – but what if you won and didn’t even realize it? That’s exactly what happened to Dick Zelasko of Troy.
Dick Zelasko was an avid player of the Mega Millions lottery but didn’t think twice when he stored the QuickPick ticket in his wallet. Despite having the lottery officially request Zelasko to contact them after checking his winning, he left it for a bit longer, even forgot it. Even through a golfing trip the ticket remained safely untouched in his wallet.
And it was only after a fraudulent lotto player came forward to claim a prize that didn’t belong to them that Zelasko finally woke up to his dormant fortune. Zelasko was even luckier that he caught the news report which featured his favourite vendor. He re-checked his ticket numbers on August 13th, 2013, and couldn’t his luck in storing the $80 million dollar winning ticket for so long.
This may sounds ridiculous but it happens more often than you’d think! There’s a 180 day limit to collect a MegaMillions jackpot, but this can easily slip by unnoticed – especially so when you’ve stored your winning ticket away. Zelasko can be thankful that his wallet remained untouched and safely in his possession on his golfing expedition!
John’s Market, Zelasko’s favourite lotto vendor, received a cash gift of $50,000 being responsible for selling the winning ticket. There’s has been a lotto vendor since 1986 but this is only the first time they have sold a winning ticket.
