Spanish El Gordo de Navidad Celebrations!

Plenty of Spanish El Gordo players are in great celebration following last night’s draw – a welcomed break from the economic crisis. Champagne corks popped all over the country as El Gordo de Navidad (The Fat One) players checked their tickets to see what cut of the $3.4 billion prize pool they held.

27 year old Raul Clavero, a mechanic from Madrid is one such player that took home the top prize of a cool $546,200. He shared the prize with four other family members with the same winning numbers. El Gordo is different from regular lotteries because it dishes out a variety of winnings to a wide crowd of ticket holders – meaning there’s always a happy winner around the festive season!

Do you know anyone who won in the annual El Gordo de Navidad special raffle? How did you all celebrate? Tell us your stories in the comments section at the end of this news item and you'll earn lotto points!

“We jumped out of bed and ran out,” Clavero said, adding, “[I’m going to] pay the mortgage, that’s the first thing, and then just enjoy the rest.” Winning tickets for El Gordo de Navidad were sold in eight locations around Spain at the least, including Madrid, Barcelona, and Modragon the northern industrial city were the electrical appliance manufacturer Fagor Electrodomesticos was forced to file for bankruptcy in October.

The second tier prize tickets of $170,700, a collective amount of $1.7 million, were all sold in the town of Granadilla de Abona on the Canary Island resort of Tenerife – an extra bonus for these lucky El Gordo players who were vacationing at the sunny resort!

El Gordo has followed the same structure since its inception but did experience one change for this year’s draw – to combat the worrying unemployment rate of 26 percent the Spanish government has allocated 20 percent of winnings over $3,400 to be taxed. This is the first time in El Gordo history that the Spanish government has taxed winnings at such high rates. Let’s hope it does help in setting the economic instability straight!

Be sure not to miss the weekly El Gordo draw, coming up this Sunday!

we did not see any pics of the El Gordo de Navidad celebrations or stories of anyone who did play. perhaps PHL could host some pics and details of how it went down.

it would be really nice if there was a draw like this one every quarter than annually. that would give reason to everyone to celebrate.
