Canberra based Aussie barrister David Richards and his family have for the second time broken the world record for the number of Christmas lights put up on a house.
Back in 2011, they held the world record with 330,000 lights strung up around their house but were beaten in 2012 by a New York family. This year they hooked up 48km of wires with 502,165 lights all over the house and garden starting the marathon installation in October.
The massive display is expected to be viewed by thousands of visitors to their home and was put up to raise a pile of cash for a children’s charity.
The Canberra Times reported that part of the reason David spent most weekends erecting this fabulous light show was to also take back his world record.
Early birds getting a glimpse of the current display
The New York family only beat David’s record by 15,000 lights and he felt it would be quite easy to do it again and reclaim the record as they didn’t beat it by that much.
He told the Canberra Times “I thought 500,000 was a nice round number so I decided to go all out as I may never do it again.”
A person from the Guinness World Records paid them a visit and confirmed it a world record the next day.
Over half a million lights that change colour as people walk around
The amazing light show was so popular that David’s cousin Luana Marriott married Patrick Cormac under the lights at the house.
He said most of his neighbours supported the display but a few had not spoken to him since the last record was set.
He was also unwilling to say how much it all cost although he did say his electricity bill had gone up by an extra £1400 a month. However, that bill is being paid by a green energy company.
I wonder what their electricity bill comes to every month? I would definitely have to have won the lottery to consider not only purchasing all these lights but paying the bill as well.
