So you’ve just won the jackpot in your favourite lottery and you’re richer than you thought you’d ever be in your life! Who’s your competition for the richest person on earth? The ranks are at all-time highs for 2013, with the net worth of the 1,426 people on the Forbes Billionaires list being a whopping $5.4 trillion, up from last year’s $4.6 trillion. The US leads with 442 billionaires, followed by Asia-Pacific with 386, Europe with 366, the Americas with 129 and the Middle East and Africa with 103.
Carlos Slim Helu is number one at a net worth of $73 billion, overtaking Bill Gates between 2010 and 2013. He resides in Mexico while not attending business meetings all over the globe. Our favourite businessman and tech-powerhouse Bill Gates sits at a comfortable $67 billion, having increased by $6 billion from last March due to increases in his investment portfolio. It’s good news for charities, because of Warren Buffett’s Giving Pledge which Gates signed, promising to donate at least half his net worth to charity.
Amancio Ortega, who established Zara, gained a whopping $19.5 billion from last year to shoot him ahead of Warren Buffett on the richest list. The Spanish businessman controls 60% of the company’s shares, which were up by a full 50% this year. It’s no wonder – there are over 5,900 stores in 86 countries! It’s the first time since 2000 that Buffett isn’t in the top three of the richest list, but he’s still worth a massive $53.5 billion!
Larry Ellison, who developed Oracle, is $7 billion wealthier compared to last year’s list at a net worth of $43 billion. This is due to a 20% increase in his Oracle stock value. He owns most of Hawaii now, as well as the Island Air airline and properties in Malibu. Not too shabby!
Another US businessman, 6th on the richest list is Charles Koch, at a net worth of $34 billion. He owns Koch Industries with his brother, the second largest private company in America. Koch and his brother are richer by $9 billion each this year, with the help from their investments in refining and chemicals. David Koch has a net worth of $34 billion, and is New York’s richest resident.
Li Ka-shing is Asia’s richest person, having his fortune shoot up by $5.5 billion to $31 billion this year. Shares for his biggest business holdings rose by more than 10%. The lovely Liliane Bettencourt, the heiress of L’Oreal, may have dementia but it certainly isn’t affecting her business. It had a share increase of 30% and drove Bettencourt’s net worth up by $6 billion to $30 billion!
And the tenth position belongs to Bernard Arnault, who is worth $29 billion for his fashion-forward sense, controlling companies such as Louis Vuitton and Bulgari. He’s down from last year’s fourth position but is still in the top ten!
