Busy planning your Valentine’s celebration? When you’re a multimillionaire you can afford to spare no expense and throw caution to the wind when it comes to budgets. Today we’re looking at couples who’ve won the lottery and how this life-changing event has shaped their futures. Settle in for the good, the bad and sometimes downright ugly when it comes to these couples who won the lottery.
Forever friends: Adrian and Gillian Bayford (Euromillions lottery winners)
Adrian and Gillian Bayford are arguably one of the world’s most well-known lottery winners to date. In 2012, this lucky couple won a magnificent ￡121 million (€148 million) on the EuroMillions lottery in August 2012. After winning, the couple bought a beautiful mansion in Cambridgeshire for ￡6 million. Unfortunately, Lady Luck was not shining down on the couple as they recently announced their divorce, stating that the win had caused them immeasurable stress and that they had not been able to spend much time with each other. Luckily though, they are still on good terms with each other with Mr Bayford saying: “I mean you cannot change what’s happened. It is just something that happened. But we’re great friends, we’re still getting on”
More than one reason to smile with this winning pair: John and Allison McDonald
"What a start to 2020. Everyone always dreams of winning the lottery at Christmas - and talks about how amazing this would be - but Allison and I never believed it would happen to us - and it has.” - John McDonald when asked about winning. 2020 has been called the year of plenty by many, but for this lucky couple, it’s certainly been a year of spectacular news and fortune. It really is the stuff fairytales are made of with the couple winning 2 million pounds on a Lucky Dip ticket (a ticket that is purchased using the quick pick function on the UK Lottery).
The winning draw took place on the 18th of Dec and 3 days after these; lottery winners received even better news - their son who had been diagnosed with cancer in May 2019, was cancer-free! John (62) and Allison (49) who had both been working long strenuous hours have since been able to retire.
A tale of riches to rags: Lara and Roger Griffiths
Sadly this lottery couple’s story isn’t a happy tale filled with joy. It seems the pressure and allure of their life-changing jackpot win, got the better of these two. In 2005, the couple won ￡1.8 million on the UK National Lottery, but have lost it all due to their extravagant spending sprees on supercars, holidays and other luxury items. Six years after winning, the pair have ended up penniless and blame each other for their misfortune. Roger has been quoted as saying: “It didn’t cross my mind that I’d end up here — the one thing I didn’t want to do was waste that money,” This unfortunate couple has ended their 14-year marriage and are now trying to rebuild their lives.
When Roger was asked whether he regretted picking the winning numbers he said he doesn’t regret it at all. “I was living the millionaire’s lifestyle — everyone who wins the Lottery should do that,’ he says. ‘There’s no point entering otherwise.”
The humble Merle and Patricia Butler: Mega Millions lottery winners
2012 was a great year for lottery winners, with many exceptional wins, including the win by Merle and Patricia Butler on the Mega Millions jackpot. They split the main jackpot with three other lucky players, taking home US $218 million after only spending $3 on tickets! The incredible lottery was at US $656 million when it was won. Admirably the pair haven’t splurged or indulged in extravagant items but consulted with investment strategists immediately after winning to ensure that they had a secure investment strategy set up. The couple still lives in Red Bud, Illinois where they were living before they won.
