Brace yourself for the El Gordo de Navidad raffle! El Gordo de Navidad is the big Spanish Christmas raffle that you didn’t know you needed. Holding the highly esteemed position of being the largest raffle in the world, El Gordo de Navidad will be giving away €2.3 billion in prizes this year!
What is El Gordo de Navidad?
El Gordo de Navidad is a Spanish raffle hosted by El Gordo - Spain’s national lottery. El Gordo translated directly from Spanish means, “the fat one of Christmas”, so many people have nicknamed this Christmas lottery, The Fat One. Locally in Spain, this raffle is called Loteria de Navidad (the Christmas lottery) and has become a household tradition for many to take part in every festive season.
The El Gordo de Navidad raffle first took place over 200 years ago in 1912. It has been held annually every year since then without ever skipping a draw - even during the Spanish Civil War! In 2019, it is now known globally as the world’s biggest raffle. This year, El Gordo de Navidad has €2.38 billion in prizes available to players.
Why is it so popular?
One of the reasons this raffle is loved so much in Spain, and globally, is because of it’s amazing odds which are a lot better than other popular lotteries and raffles. There is a 1 in 6 chance of winning a tiered prize and just a 1 in 100 000 chance of winning the top prize!
Another reason this Christmas lottery is so popular is due to the joyous atmosphere surrounding it. As a result of how the entries work (each raffle number is printed 180 times and each entry can be divided into 10 shares) lots of people win at once and many people get to enjoy the celebration of winning with friends and loved ones. It’s not uncommon for players to join forces, either with family, friends or work colleagues, to share the costs of taking part by each buying a share of an entry.
Entries and winnings
A total of 18 million raffle tickets are available each year. Players can either choose to buy a Decimo, which is 1/10th of a full entry, or to buy a Billete, which is a full entry. The full entry is of course more expensive than buying a share, but also gives the entry holder a way larger share of the prize if the number is drawn. The top prize for a Billete entry holder is €4 million and the top prize for a Decimo entry holder is €400 000. There are also thousands of tiered prizes ranging from €1.25 million all the way down to €200.
