Although lottery draws are completely random, sometimes we stumble across lottery results that just seem so improbable. While we know that every number has the same chance of being drawn as every other number in the draw, we can’t help but think that some of the following lottery results have more to do with luck and timing, than with probability.
Sequential numbers showing up in lottery results has happened almost too many times to count. Sequential numbers mean numbers following their usual counting pattern. There have been reports of lottery results including 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, and 25, others with 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, and 36, and even lottery results of 1, 2, 3 ,4 ,5 ,6, and 7! These kinds of number sequences seem highly unlikely but has happened time and time again in lotteries all over the world.
Fortune Cookie Numbers
“All the preparation that you’ve done will finally pay off” was the fortune given in a fortune cookie that had ‘lucky numbers’ printed on the back. 110 people ended up playing these numbers in the following US Powerball draw and ended up getting 5 of the 6 numbers correct in the lottery results! Although these players were extremely happy to win the $19 million jackpot, because there were so many winners, they only each ended up walking away with $100 000 to $500 000 each (depending on whether they had chosen the Power Play option or not).
An extremely strange occurrence happened in the Bulgarian Lottery, in 2009, when the lottery results were drawn exactly the same in two consecutive lottery draws. All of the lottery numbers were the exact same as the previous weeks lottery numbers. In the first draw, nobody had won, but 18 lucky players who decided to play the previous lottery results numbers ended up winning the second draw’s jackpot!
Winning Multiple Times
It has happened over and over again that previous lottery winners have won the lottery multiple times. Are they just extremely lucky or do they know a strategy that we don’t? Hundreds of these winners say that they just pick random numbers and hope for the best, while others say that they follow certain patterns or strategies to boost their chances. We’re not sure who is telling the truth, but we can say one thing for sure....being able to correctly choose the lottery results multiple times is definitely a strange coincidence!
Multiples of a Number
Earlier we spoke about the rarity of sequential numbers and the chances of multiples of a number showing up in lottery results seems just as weird. Like sequential numbers, lottery results comprised of multiples is actually more frequent than you would think. Multiple of numbers (like 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 or 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42) have been seen in lottery results around the world in almost every number multiple. A fun fact is that multiples of 7 is the most frequent multiple that seems to show up in lottery results.
