Picking your US Powerball numbers
If you’re superstitious or you have a set of lucky numbers, you may want to play the same numbers every time. Indeed, Robert Bailey from Harlem, New York, won the Powerball jackpot after playing the same numbers every week for 25 years, so it can certainly pay off. However, in the same draw, a woman from Iowa also hit the jackpot with a Quick Pick entry, so either option can secure you the big prize.
Similarly, Judy Fincham from Clifton, Colorado managed to win a $133 million Powerball jackpot after playing the same numbers for over 30 years, whilst Manuel Franco of West Allis, Wisconsin scored a massive $768 million with a Quick Pick entry.
It just goes to show, whether you choose your numbers or opt for a Quick Pick, the chance to win the jackpot is always there.
How to play Powerball
To play Powerball, you’ll need to pick from two sets of numbers. Firstly, you’ll need to pick five numbers from a selection of 69 white numbers. Then, you’ll need to pick one number from a selection of 26 red balls. The red balls represent the Powerball, and you’ll need to match all five numbers and the Powerball to win the jackpot.
When it comes to the main, white numbers 26, 16, 41, 22 and 32 are the ones most commonly drawn, whilst 6 is the Powerball which has been drawn most often. Whilst 7 and 11 are common Powerball choices, it’s actually 6, 20, 9, 2 and 12 which have been drawn most frequently.
Winning the Powerball jackpot
If you’re the lucky winner of the Powerball jackpot, you’ll need to know exactly what you’ve won! Powerball jackpot winners have two choices; they can either take their prize as an annuity or as a lump sum.
If you choose to take the annuity, you’ll receive the entire prize, but it will spread out over a period of 30 years. Designed to deliver a reliable income for three decades, the annuity option will allow you to take the maximum amount overall.
If you’d prefer to take the lump-sum, you can usually access a higher amount of money in the short term. However, if you do choose to take the lump-sum, you’ll receive a lower amount than the prize advertised. This is because the value of the money would have increased over time and funded the annuity, if you’d chosen that option, and because you’ll pay a higher amount of tax on a lump.
Of course, whichever option you choose, a Powerball jackpot is going to ensure you win a substantial amount!
