We all have our favourite TV show, so when it eventually mentions winning lottery numbers players can’t help but sit up and take note. Even though these fictional ‘winning numbers’ were most likely pulled from a hat by a screenwriter, you can’t help but feel some luck radiating from them. So which TV shows have made lottery players winners and which shows have predicted lottery numbers? Let’s find out together.
Famous TV shows with lottery winners
There’s no shortage of lottery winners on famous television shows, but there are a few that stand out. Who can forget Paycheck and It Could Happen to You where characters played by Ben Affleck and Nicolas Cage won big in lottery games.
Then there’s the family favourite, Bart Simpson himself who won big on television.
So why does everyone remember Lost?
Lost is a popular drama series that aired between 2004 and 2010. But it’s not the drama that made this a household name to lottery players, the massive lottery win in the show did the trick. In one episode, character Hugo “Hurley” Reyes won $114 million from the lucky numbers; 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42.
Lost fans around the world have been playing the shows lucky numbers in the hopes of winning much like their favourite character. And eventually, they did! On January 5, 2011, only 6 months after the series finale of Lost, thousands of fans walked away with a win from Mega Millions! Think you can match the magic numbers? Click here to try!
The Lost lottery numbers
Imagine seeing your numbers are the winning Mega Millions numbers! The excitement! The thrill! The realization of finally becoming a millionaire! That’s exactly what Mega Millions players felt and thought when some of their lucky numbers were drawn. The official draw numbers were; 4, 8, 15, 25, 47 and 42.
Except, when Mega Millions players realised how many players actually played the Lost numbers, their excitement and dreams of becoming a millionaire faded. Records show that a massive 41,763 people shared the 5th tier prize for matching 3 correct balls plus the Megaball.
Each winner ended up walking away with $150 but that didn’t stop the press from tracking down the actor who played the infamous Lost character Hurley. When asked for his opinion he responded “When will people learn? The numbers are bad!”.
In the tv show, Hurley didn’t have the best luck after he became a millionaire. Beside the infamous plane crash which landed him on the island in the first place, he survived a meteor strike and his house burning down!
Has the Lost numbers appeared anywhere else?
It turns out Mega Millions isn’t the first lottery where the Lost numbers have been drawn. In November 2005 only a year after Lost first aired, the Irish Lotto came close when the winning numbers where; 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 24. If players had played the Lost numbers they would have matched 5 balls and walked away with €927. If the 24 was reversed and was 42 instead, players would have matched all 6 numbers and would have walked away with a million euros!
