## Lotto numbers and how to pick them

Are your lottery numbers hot or not?

When playing many top international lotteries, you’ll need to pick 6 numbers in total. When playing Powerball this will be 5 white numbers and 1 powerball. Every lottery has different names for their balls, but we can all agree that the amount of balls you need to pick is 6. These six numbers can make anyone a millionaire and that’s why they’re so important. So how do you pick yours? Today we’re looking at common strategies people use to pick their lottery numbers, do you use these too?

### The importance of number combinations in lotteries

To win the jackpot, players will need to match all 6 numbers to the 6 numbers that are drawn. Not only do the numbers themselves need to match, but so does the order in which they appear. When playing Powerball, players can pick between 69 white balls and 26 powerballs - that’s a lot of possible combinations, it’s 11,238,513 possible combinations to be exact. Number selection is everything - it’s the one question that comes up time and time again on any lottery platform and the most asked question; how do I pick winning numbers?. There might not be a winning number formula, because if there was we’d all be millionaires right? Every player has their own strategy and how they pick their numbers, but hot, cold and due numbers are a hot topic.

### How to use statistics to predict winning lottery numbers

Statistics. Statistics. Statistics. This is a word we’re hearing all around the lottery industry.

It is possible to use statistics to select winning numbers, however, based on the mathematics behind lotteries, numbers chosen using statistics are not more likely to be drawn than a set of random numbers. As a winner can only walk away with the jackpot if they have matched the numbers and the order in which the numbers appear, all number combinations have an equal chance of being drawn.

But, some numbers are drawn more frequently than others within a particular time frame and this is what leads to people selecting numbers based on them being hot, cold or due numbers.

### What are lottery hot numbers?

As the name suggests, hot numbers are exactly that; hot. Hot numbers are the numbers that are most frequently drawn in any lottery in a specific period of time.

### Here’s an example:

Let’s say that the numbers 4, 6, 10, 19 and 62 were drawn in the last past thirty draws and 8 has been the Powerball in four of those thirty draws. Some players would then look at this statistics and label the numbers 4, 6, 10, 19 and 62 as hot numbers because they’ve been drawn more than any other number.

The logic with hot numbers is that if they’ve been the most frequently drawn numbers in the past, they’ll continue on that streak in the future.

### What are lottery cold numbers?

Cold numbers are then the opposite of hot numbers. Cold numbers are the numbers that are drawn the least in any lottery in a specific time period.

The strategy behind colds numbers is that if the numbers haven’t been drawn yet, then it’s only a matter of time until they are. If numbers are not drawn frequently in the past, then the chance of them being drawn in the future are higher.

### Ever heard of due numbers?

Can you guess what these numbers are? Often referred to as overdue or outstanding numbers, due numbers are the numbers that have not yet been drawn in a specific period of time.

### Here’s an example:

If a number is drawn 10 times over 200 draws, then on average that particular number is drawn every 40 draws. If 40 draws have come and gone and that number has not been drawn, it then becomes a due number.

Sometimes due numbers are also hot numbers and then they are perfect for playing.

Whether you’re playing hot numbers, due numbers or selecting quick pick, every player has their own number selection strategy. Remember, there are 11,238,513 possible winning combinations in any lottery and every number combination has an equal chance of being drawn.
