- Mavis Wanczyk
- Kimberly Morris
After spending 32 years in a clerical job in the nursing department at Mercy Centre in Springfield, becoming a lotto winner was a good career change for Mavis Wanczyk.
On the same night as the big draw that she entered, she joked with a firefighter that she just wasn’t feeling lucky that night, adding that the winner was “never going to be me. It’s just a pipe dream that I’ve always had”, she said. Turns out, this couldn’t be further from the truth because later that night when she checked her ticket, she was holding the winning numbers in her hand.
With a jackpot sitting at $758.7 million, Mavis not only won the lottery, but she also made history for winning the largest jackpot with a single-ticket. Mavis then allowed the jackpot to change her life. After 32 years of service, Mavis quit her job and decided to enjoy some “me-time”. Later on Facebook she joked that she needed a vacation and “by vacation, I mean I need to move away and find a new job. On a beach. With rum”. This sounds like a great way to enjoy a lottery jackpot!
Lightning doesn’t strike twice but luck sure does, and hospital worker Kimberly Morris will agree. You’ll never believe how lucky this mother of three from North Carolina was in one day.
On a Monday morning Kimberly tried to start her week on the right foot by playing the lottery. Kimberly stopped at a supermarket to quickly pick up a scratchcard worth $4, 000,000. Her Monday started on a winning note when she ended up walking away with $10,000. Morris didn’t waste a moment and immediately drove to the North Carolina Education Lottery headquarters to claim her prize.
Right when she thought her day could not get any better, it did! On her way back home from claiming her prize, Morris decided to try her luck one more time, just to see what would happen. She made a stop at a different supermarket but decided to buy the same scratchcard - and she walked away with $1 million.
Unlike the first time she won, Morris called her husband immediately. He says that she was “freaking out on the phone” from excitement. He recalls not being able to understand her but when he finally did, he couldn't believe it. According to him he needed “to come home first and see it for himself”.
Morris then made her second trip to the lottery headquarters to collect her second prize for the day. She was then given the option between 20 payments of $50,000 a year, or a lump sum of $600,000. According to Morris she plans to invest her money and share it with her children. Best of luck to her!
