Everything you need to know about the El Nino raffle

Everything you need to know about the El Nino raffle.

If you missed the El Gordo de Navidad in December, it’s time to meet El Nino. Currently sitting at €700 million, this January jackpot is guaranteed to make 2018 someone’s best year yet. Here’s your guide to the 2018 El Nino raffle.

Why El Nino is so popular

Easy to play and high chances of winning makes El Nino a ‘must-play’ every year. Each player has a 1 in 100,000 chance of hitting the jackpot and a 1 in 3 chance of winning a secondary prize. Great odds right? Don’t let it slip by and play now.

How El Nino began

El Nino directly translates to child or ‘little one’, that’s why El Nino is often referred to as the “little brother” of the famous December lotto, El Gordo.

Traditionally, the first born is usually the favourite and first choice for King or Queen, and it seems the same can be said for these siblings. While there is plenty documentation on the history and origin of El Gordo, not that much is said about El Nino, but here’s what we’d like to share with you.

1941 marks the date of the first El Nino draw and in 1966 it officially became part of Loteria Nacional. Originally the draws were held annually on January 5th, but since 2000, it is now held on January 6th. This date happens to coincide with Epiphany, the date that the Christian faith recognises as the day the Three Wise Men visited Jesus.

Winning with EL Nino

How El Nino works

Much like the Spanish Christmas lottery, El Nino numbers range from 00000 to 99999, prizes are broken down into tiers and each tier contains different prize totals.

El Nino then has multiple copies of tickets. In total, there are 45 sets of tickets ranging from 00000 to 99999. This means that up to 45 people can potentially have the same ticket number.

Winning with EL Nino

Each ticket is made up of 10 shares. When you buy 1 ticket, you buy 1 single share of that ticket, 1/10. This will cost you 1/10th of the usual ticket price and in turn you will receive 1/10th of the prize.

Here’s an example:

A ticket wins the first prize. The player with a full ticket will win €2 million but a player with only a single share, 1/10th, will win 1/10 of the prize and walk away with €200, 000.
