The second-biggest Powerball lottery draw in history happened on Wednesday the 23rd of August. It was won by a single ticket, too! The winner is 53-year-old hospital worker and mother of two from Chicopee, Massachusetts. She came forward to claim her $758 million prize a day after the draw had taken place. What a lucky, lucky woman indeed!
Mavis Wancyk, a hospital worker, has always considered winning the lottery as a “pipe dream.” Funnily enough, this pipe dream actually came true after her lucky numbers matched the most valuable winning ticket in US history. “My dream has finally come true. I just can’t believe it. I am still trying to process it. It’s tremendous luck. Someone must really be smiling down on me,” said the happy winner.
When lottery officials at the press conference asked her what the first thing she would be doing is, she said she wants to “hide in her bed.” Mavis has been wanting to retire for a long time now and take it easy. “I called them and told them I will not be coming back,” she said. She’s been working for the Mercy Medical Center in Springfield for 32 years and she’s tired now.
“I called the hospital and told them I won’t be coming back,” said the winner with a laugh. She informed the officials that she and her co-worker checked their lottery numbers at work on Wednesday night after the draw had happened. Mavis was so rattled when she realized she was the winner. The news was refusing to sink in and she was visibly shaken up. She was nervous about driving home so she asked her co-worker to follow her.
Mavis has a 31-year-old daughter as well as a 26-year-old son. The realization that she had just become millions of dollars richer only sunk in a day after she was given the news. “I was on such a high now, but I’m slowly started to come down from all that. Right now, I just want to be me, be alone and figure out what I want to do,” said Mavis.
Mavis chose to accept her winnings as a once-off lump sum payment of $480 million before taxes. She bought her winning ticket the afternoon of the draw at a Pride market in Chicopee, which is 90 miles west of Boston.
As one could imagine, the announcement about that store selling the winning Powerball ticket sent a flock of media to Handy Variety in Watertown. The store owner, Kamaljeet Kaur, took the news pretty well seeing that he would be receiving $50,000 for selling the ticket.
The winning numbers were 6-7-16-23-26 with the Powerball number 4. The winner’s prize is the second-largest Powerball pay out in history. In addition to Mavis, there were many hopefuls who walked away with a lovely prize of their own. Six people won $2 million each and 34 others walked away with $1 million.
In total, there are about 292,201,338 possible Powerball number combinations which make the odds of winning the jackpot 1 in 292,201,338. At $2 a ticket, it would cost someone a staggering $584,402,676 to buy every possible combination. Overall odds of winning any prize in a Powerball draw are 1 in 24.87.
