The Masters Golf Tournament, more commonly known as ‘The Masters’ or 'US Masters' is the first of the four annual major golf championships, and it’s going to unfold this week from the 11th to the 14th of April at the prestigious Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.
It all began in 1934 with the first-ever Augusta National Masters Invitation Tournament. The format of the first tournament was arranged so that golfers played holes 10-18 as the first nine, and 1-9 as the second nine. The format was reversed the following year and has remained that way.
Over the years, the Augusta National Golf Course has been adjusted several times. Among the changes: greens have been reshaped and, on occasion, entirely re-designed, bunkers have been added, water hazards have been extended, new tee boxes have been built, hundreds of trees have been planted, and several mounds have been installed. These adjustments brought in several criticisms, but the most competitive players have defended the course saying that it’s brought fresh challenges.
Mastering The Masters
In the 1960's and 1970's, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus dominated the tournament. These three key players won the event 11 times during that span of 20 years.
- In 1986, Jack Nicklaus became the oldest player to win the Masters, winning for a sixth time at the age of 46.
- South African golfing legend, Gary Player, was the first non-American player to win the tournament in 1961.
- In 1997, Tiger Woods won the Masters by twelve shots at the age of 21, breaking the long-standing scoring record and also breaking the record for youngest player to win the Masters.
With a new blonde on his arm and a renewed swagger, will Tiger add to his total of 14 major championship victories this weekend?
Few sports are capable of producing such legendary icons as golf. The sport of golf may, however, be rivalled by Formula 1 racing. One only has to think of such racing legends as Prost, Senna and Schumacher to know exactly what we mean.
