Independence Day was declared on the 4th July 1776, when Richard Henry Lee, born in Virginia and schooled in England, proposed that the 13 American colonies should declare their independence from Britain. A committee of five men which included Thomas Jefferson, were appointed to build a case of severing ties with Britain and then draft the Declaration of Independence. On the 2nd July 1776, congress voted in favour and it was formally issued two days later on the 4th July 1776.
The Declaration of Independence proclaims that in the newly independent nation, "all men are created equal" and should have the right to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness".
So every year, Americans celebrate freedom and independence on the 4th July with barbecues, picnics, parades, concerts, baseball games, political speeches and of course fireworks! The entire country is decorated in the star-spangle colours of red, white and blue, which is the highest demonstration of patriotism a nation can show.

If there’s one place that knows exactly how to throw a party – its Vegas.
