Is there ever such a thing as too much money? Just because you are already wealthy, doesn't mean that you can't try your luck at the lottery. Here are a few rich and famous celebrities who still play the lottery!
We're not sure whether Hugh Jackman plays the lottery himself, but this world-famous actor does have a habit of buying lottery entries for other people. Hugh Jackman's lottery buying became news in 2011 when it surfaced that he was buying one entry per week for every single member of the 500-strong crew for sci-fi flick Real Steel.
Pop legend, Madonna, is one of the very few celebrities to have publicly announced a lottery win. In 2012, Madonna won a total of €120,000 as a second-tier prize in SuperEna Lotto – all of which she donated to help build schools in Malawi.
Paris Hilton, the hotel heiress who is known best for being famous, bought 1500 entries into a SuperEna Lotto draw in 2008. When asked about it, she said that if she were to win, she would invest at least 10% of the prize money into good causes.
The Manchester United football star, Wayne Rooney, is passionate about playing the lottery! A friend of his told The Daily Star newspaper:
"Wayne is a working-class boy at heart, and despite having millions in the bank, he loves a flutter on the lottery and dreams of landing a multi-million-pound jackpot. It's quite funny when you think about how rich he is, but I guess it proves that no matter how well you're doing, someone else is always doing better."
In early 2019, the famous rapper 50 Cent, almost won $900 000 in the US Powerball draw. 50 Cent posted a photo of his entry on Instagram to show his followers how close he had come to winning the US Powerball jackpot. He had managed to match 3 out of 5 regular numbers!
Not only is George Clooney a great actor and coffee spokesperson – he is also a considerable philanthropist! He recently purchased 1,000 lottery tickets in 2010, in the hopes of winning a fortune to donate to the earthquake-stricken people of Haiti. Although George Clooney's entries, unfortunately, didn't win, he managed to raise an impressive amount of money for the good cause by teaming up with MTV to host a fundraising telethon!
According to the news agency Agipronews, Clooney had used a proxy service to block purchase a bank of lottery tickets (around a thousand tickets according to rumour). "The jackpot in Italy is at very high levels - has confided to friends - why not try?". Not to be outdone, Elizabeth Hurley, a good friend of his bought 500 more entries.
Clooney mobilized on many fronts to help the people of Haiti affected by the earthquake on 12 January. In a few days has set up a unique telethon in collaboration with MTV, "Hope for Haiti now", which was attended by entertainment stars such as Bono, Bruce Springsteen, Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake and Stevie Wonder. Including proceeds from the concert, which was held January 22 in Los Angeles, the actor has collected 57 million dollars.
Playing the lottery still is a favourite past time for singer Jessica Simpson, despite how much extra cash she already has in the bank. She told a magazine recently:
"I jumped all into the Powerball draw the other night. I didn't win, unfortunately! I love playing it! I'm normally pretty lucky at things like the lottery, but I don't know, I always ask, like, do rich people even win the lottery?"
