Some of the most interesting things about lotteries are the stories that surround them. Lotteries are played all over the world and there are bound to be wonderful, mysterious and even ridiculous coincidences that seem incredibly unlikely. Some will make people question if they’re real or not, and some will convince players to buy lottery tickets right now. Here are five crazy lottery stories.
The 4-Time Winner
Winning the lottery once is considered lucky, but winning four times would definitely draw attention. A Texan woman won the lottery four separate times, totalling up to $20 million in prize money. What makes this even more questionable is that this woman possesses a PhD from Stanford University that specializes in statistics. Some think she devised a genius method of increasing her chances of winning, but it's just luck!
The Bulgarian Lottery Coincidence
In September of 2009, the lottery changes forever in Bulgaria. The lottery played out as usual, but the numbers were exactly the same as the ones drawn the previous week. This isn’t completely out of the ordinary and there’s a very small chance it can happen, but that’s not the end of the story. The first time the numbers were drawn, there were no winners. The second time around, there were 18 jackpot winners. Lottery officials concluded that it was just a coincidence, but many Bulgarian players were suspicious of their country’s lottery. Thankfully, even if they don’t trust their own national lottery, they can still buy lottery tickets with us and play the lottery online.
Lucky Fortune Cookies
In 2005, a Powerball draw resulted in 110 second-place winners. At first, people assumed that there was some kind of conspiracy going on. However, it was later discovered that all of the 110 winners bought their lottery tickets after receiving the numbers from a fortune cookie. Officials were stumped and considered the possibility of fraud, but it was later revealed that it was a pure coincidence.
The Oregon Lottery Prediction
The Columbian Newspaper in Vancouver landed itself in hot water when it printed the winning numbers for the Oregon lottery 24 hours before the draw itself. Officials received a call and hired a detective to uncover how it happened, and it turns out that the writer for the lottery predictions simply picked Virginia’s Pick-4 numbers, using them for the predictions page.
