A lucky winner of the 10th largest jackpot win in US Lottery history has finally come forward to claim their prize. They have taken a month to decide what they want to do with their newfound fortune, but they have finally come forward to prove they are the winner of the $447.8 million Powerball lottery jackpot.
The winner’s name is Jeff Lindsay and he made it very clear that he didn’t want to speak to the media after claiming his prize on a Wednesday morning. He even declined to take a winner’s photo with his cheque. He just wanted to have his privacy. Although he declined media and press attention, he was required by Californian state law to release his name to the public.
As you could imagine, Jeff was incredibly excited to have won the prize and he opted to accept the winnings in the form of a lump sum payment. His prize amounted to $279.1 million before taxes. “We are obviously thrilled with this tremendous stroke of good luck and are still getting our arms around what it means for us,” said Jeff.
Although he didn’t want a press conference and to make a big deal out of his win, he was kind enough to give lottery officials a statement on how he plans to handle his money going forward. “We are private people and do not want to change who we are or become public figures and ask that people appreciate and respect our privacy. In order to help manage what has already been a somewhat overwhelming process, we have engaged a number of financial, legal and other advisors to guide us and help us make the best decisions possible,” said Jeff.
He added, “Once things calm down, we plan on working closely with our team of advisors to determine how to properly manage and invest this newfound wealth to ensure that we can support our family and causes that are important to us for many generations to come.”
The Powerball winner bought his winning ticket at the Marietta Liquor & Deli, located at 27985 Bradley Road in Sun City, California. The owner of the store was rewarded with $1 million for selling the winning ticket. Jeff went to the store to buy some scratch cards and returned later to cash in one that was a winner. On a whim, he decided to buy 10 more Powerball tickets while he was there cashing in the other winner.
The winning ticket which is worth over half a billion dollars, actually sitting out in the open on his kitchen counter until Jeff heard the news that there was a winning Powerball ticket bought from the same store he was recently in. His lucky ticket was in the June 10th draw and was the only ticket that matched all the winning numbers. The lucky numbers were 20-26-32-38-58 and the Powerball was 3.
Hugo Lopez, the California Lottery Director, said, “We congratulate Jeff and his family on their huge win. The winner is informed and has already assembled a team of legal and financial advisors to help him make the most of his newfound wealth and make it last for many generations. We also understand that they plan on giving back to causes important to them and that is good news for us all. The California Lottery’s mission is to provide supplemental funding for public schools and a portion of any Lottery tickets purchased goes towards that cause.
