US Powerball vs Mega Millions

Early last year, the whole world watched in astonishment as three of the luckiest people in the world, quite literally, shared the colossal $1.58 billion Powerball jackpot. Powerball had finally made history as the first lottery to draw a billion-dollar jackpot.

Powerball had broken the previous record which was set by its competitor, Mega Millions. Before that massive jackpot was won, Mega Millions held the throne for the biggest jackpot drawn at the time: $656 million. That prize was also shared by three winners in March 2012.

You know, in fact, all of the biggest lottery wins recorded have all come from US Powerball and Mega Millions. That’s exactly why these two multi-state games are at the top of the lottery food chain, so to speak! And they aren’t only popular within the US. They are also the most popular all over the world thanks to players being able to get lottery tickets for the massive draws online.

With that said, it’s important to understand everything you can about these two lotteries and how they differ from each other. Knowledge is power, after all!

What are the official rules for each of these American lotteries

Both of these games share a similar format. You pick five main numbers and also a bonus number. For a standard Powerball game, you would pick 5 numbers out of a possible 69, and bonus numbers from a possible 26. The bonus number in Powerball is also known as the “Powerball”.

For Mega Millions, a standard game consists of picking 5 numbers from a possible 75, including an extra number out of a possible 15. The bonus ball in a Mega Millions game is also referred to as the “Mega Ball.”

Each lottery has nine prize tiers which differ according to how many numbers you match correctly in a draw. Logically, the more numbers you manage to match, the more money you win.

Which lottery offers the biggest jackpots?

The funny thing about these two giants going head to head is that they generally do just that! Go head-to-head! You could say they also butt heads once in a while because they’re in a constant race to break each other’s records. So, the results of all this constant competition mean one thing: 16 of the biggest jackpots ever won in history were either on Powerball or Mega Millions.

The current biggest jackpot record is held by Powerball as we mentioned earlier. $1.6 billion was won in January 2016 and broke Mega Millions’ previous record of $656 million. Before Powerball came along and smashed this record, it was the highest ranking jackpot for three years in a row. In fact, out of the 10 biggest jackpots of all time, 6 of them belong to US Powerball, and only 4 go to Mega Millions.

But why is this? Our theory is that Powerball usually has the upper hand when it comes to fast-growing jackpots due to its massive starting amount of $40 million. Mega Millions only begins with $15 million. So US Powerball creates huge jackpots faster than Mega Millions because it has a sweet head start, you could say.

Which lottery gives you a better chance of winning

This all depends on a lot of things. If you’re talking about hitting the top prize, then both lotteries don’t differ that much in terms of their probabilities. Mega Millions offers you a slightly better chance with 1 in 258,890,850, whereas Powerball gives you 1 in 292,201,338 of hitting the jackpot.

If you are looking to aim lower by just wanting to grab yourself a consolation prize, then Mega Millions takes the cake again in terms of probability. You have a 1 in 15 chance of scooping one of the nine prize divisions.

If you are interested in the return of investment on what you’re paying for a lottery ticket, then Mega Millions is the winner again. Powerball and Mega Millions cost around the same price on PlayHugeLottos.

If you think about it, any prize that you win that’s greater than what you paid for a lottery ticket is a return on investment! A bit of profit, at least. Mega Millions’ 5th prize tier pays out a fixed amount of $6 if you match 2 main numbers and the Mega Ball. The chances of winning that are 1 in 473. Not so bad.

Powerball, on the other hand, has a lower return on investment if you match it up against its rival, Mega Millions. Powerball’s 7th prize tier pays out a fixed amount higher than Mega Millions at $9 for matching 2 main numbers and the Powerball, but the chances of winning are slimmer – 1 in 701.

Which game is cheaper to bet on

Both games cost around the same price for a standard game.

How will I receive my payouts

Both lotteries have the same rules when it comes time to claim your winnings for the jackpot. Either you can accept it as a lump sum, or an annuity which gets paid out to you in instalments over a period of 30 years.

So, in conclusion, which is the game that takes the throne

Both are very similar. Each game comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. They are rivals for a reason!  Powerball give players a much bigger starting jackpot and bigger payout records than Mega Millions. When it comes to winning more frequently on decent amounts, Mega Millions give you better chances.

It’s a difficult decision to make, but it’s easier than you think. When it comes to playing these two massive American lotteries, there isn’t really a “better” or “worse” one to play. After all, they are the only games in the world that create such huge jackpots on a regular basis.

Good thing you don’t have to pick one if you don’t want to on PlayHugeLottos.com! You can go right ahead and play BOTH at your convenience online with us.

Mega Millions is better because it costs less than PB and can give upto 5 millions in the second prize while PB limits it to 2 million only.
